What actually makes a website fast

Speed is the most underrated feature a website can have. A plain-English look at what makes sites slow, and how we keep the ones we build quick.

Nobody has ever complained that a website loaded too quickly. Speed keeps visitors around, helps you rank on Google and quietly makes everything feel more professional. So what actually makes the difference?

Images are usually the culprit

The single biggest cause of slow sites is images that are far bigger than they need to be. A photo straight off a phone can be 5MB. Properly resized and compressed, the same photo can look identical at a tenth of the size. We optimise every image on every site we build, automatically.

Less code, fewer plugins

Many sites are built on page builders stacked with plugins, each one loading its own scripts on every page. It adds up fast. We write lean, purpose-built code instead, so the browser only loads what the page actually uses.

Good hosting matters

Cheap shared hosting puts your site on a crowded server on the other side of the world. UK businesses should host in or near the UK, on servers with room to breathe. It is one of the cheapest speed upgrades there is.

Caching does the heavy lifting

Caching means the server does the hard work once, then serves the ready-made result to everyone else. Done right, it can turn a one-second page into a fifty-millisecond one.

Every site we build gets all of this as standard, because speed should not be an optional extra. Curious how your current site measures up? Ask us for a free speed check.
